Clare Karibika
Current Position: Student, mum and housekeeper (aaahhhh.... sounds so nice after so many years of non-stop work and live-in house help!) Doing my Masters in Health Management through Newcastle University and working regular casual shifts at Gosford Hospital (also enjoying being back as a practicing clinician and seeing healthcare from a whole new perspective again:)
From: Point Clare, Central Coast, NSW
Role in Rwanda: Registered Nurse on the ward
What sparked your interest in being involved: I lived and worked in Rwanda for 11 years at King Faisal Hospital ... this is my first year back in Australia and I must admit I'm really "homesick" for Kigali life!!... looking forward so much to going back, seeing old friends/family and contributing in a different way this time. So impressed by the whole OOH programme ... it has a huge impact not just for the patients and their families but also on ongoing education for all staff on the Rwandan side.
Similar Trips that you’ve been on: This is my first as an OOH member.
What you remember most from previous trips: Though I was usually busy in my own work at King Faisal Hospital, I always enjoyed keeping up with the progress of the cardiac patients and was constantly inspired by the OOH team, not just by their work and their attitude but a great sense of fun.
Passions & Interests: Loving spending so much more time these days with my kids (even learning to love Rugby) and my family here ... but my other big passion is for all things Rwandan ... love the people, the politics and the great plans for the future!!
